What is your New Year’s Resolution?
- Lose Weight?
- Eat Better?
- Workout more?
Have you thought about a Financial New Year’s Resolution? We at Day Air can help you reach all your Financial Resolutions for 2015. If you haven’t thought about your Financial Resolutions here are a few things that should be on your list:
Create a Budget
The first step toward taking control of your financial situation is to do a realistic assessment of how much money you take in and how much money you spend. Start by listing your income from all sources. Then, list your “fixed” expenses, those that are the same each month such as a mortgage payment or rent, car payments, and insurance premiums. Next, list the expenses that vary such as entertainment, recreation, and clothing. Writing down all your expenses, even those that seem insignificant, is a helpful way to track your spending patterns, identify necessary expenses, and prioritize the rest. The goal is to make sure you can make ends meet on the basics: housing, food, health care, insurance, and education.
There’s no underestimating the importance of formulating a budget. It’s a process that helps you develop the self-discipline you’ll need to manage your money and keep needs, wants and desires in their proper relationship. A spending plan also forces you and your family to develop disciplined attitudes about earning, saving and living within your means. No matter what your net worth is, it is important to have a basic estate plan in place. Such a plan ensures that your family and financial goals are met after you pass.
Ask yourself 3 questions:
- Whom do you want to inherit your assets – You can ensure this by setting up any accounts, titles, or real-estate as transfer on death. You will want check to check and see if your beneficiaries on your retirement accounts and life insurance policies are current. Doing these may help to avoid probate.
- Whom do you want handling your financial affairs if you are ever incapacitated- Make sure you have a Power of Attorney assigned.
- Whom do you want making medical decisions for you if you became unable to make them – Have a living will or health-care proxy (medical power of attorney) assigned to make medical decisions.
Plan for Retirement
If you haven’t already, meet with a Financial Advisor to set up a plan for retirement. They can help set financial goals and priorities and recommend specific steps to meet these goals. They can provide you advice on how to allocate your investments, what kind of insurance is needed and explain how certain moves may affect your taxes or estate.
